Christopher McGinnis is one young man you should keep your eye on. There has been, and still are many great pianist, but now we have Christopher. He is a true virtuoso. His skills with piano is unbelievable, he can play jazz, Latin, pop, you name it he can do it, and he will put his own spin to it, making it more delightful than it was originally. At just thirteen years old he is a piano genius.
Just like many people who plays any instrument they started at an early age. Christopher began his mastery of piano at an early age as well. At age five he started with formal training, with lessons lasting about fifteen minutes a day given by his dad. His dad being a great musician himself, it was only natural for him to be his first teacher, but he still learns much from him still today. Outside of his dad, he has had the opportunity to study with many great musicians. He first studied under Eri Yamamotto, then privately at the Julliard School in NYC under David Tong, and currently he is studying with the ELDAR and Zacaii Curtis.
He has taken his talent to another level since then. At age nine he began to sing while playing the piano. While he can play many styles of music, his choice when it comes to singing, is pop. He has taken vocal lessons from Moogy Klingman (from the band UTOPIA).
Christopher made his debut performance at just ten years old at the historic Paramount Theatre. Since his beginning at the Paramount Theatre, he now performs at least 28 times per year all over NY, including Madison Square Garden. Here at Madison Square Garden in front of 25,000 people is where he made his all time favorite performances, he has had the honor to perform there three times in 2010. He said, "It was awesome to hear all those people clapping at the end". Playing here was an awesome experience for him and just waiting in the wings for them to call his name was very cool. Once they called his name and he walked out to center stage and everyone clapping was truly amazing. Also this past year he had a lot of fun performing for Ashford and Simpson.
His musical talent has grown very well since his beginning, and so has his writing skills. He wrote his first song at age six. It was a great kids song about a eating a hot dog with mustard. Christopher now has many songs that he has written, and because he likes to sing, many of those have been pop. He has recored three of his originals so far. The first song he recored is called "Time Waits For No One", which is a high energy pop song, then came "Dreams Are Made Of". The last that he record is a ballad called "The War Song, An American Hero". This song is very heart felt and meaningful song, written for the all the soldiers and special people who are fighting for our freedom. He says, "that it is important to remember all the men and women who are in jobs that help people just because they care, and not because they have to. They don`t do their jobs for money , because they love to help people". This goes to show what kind of person Christopher is, he cares about people, not just himself.
While he loves music, he is also loves acting. It seems there is no end to this talented young man can do. He was in a national commercial, playing Young Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford on the Papa Johns commercials for the advertisements, for the movie Crystal Skull. He was also a featured actor on Law and Order Criminal Intent. His scenes on the show was with Jeff Goldblum and Julianne Nicolson. He will be coming up on the season opener of The Electric Company on Monday February 7th at 5pm on PBS. He has appeared in many independent films as well and has done some voioceover work.
Christopher has done many wonderful things with music and film, but more important he is still just a regular kid. He loves all kinds of sports, and has been playing for school and town sports leagues since he was five years old. They have a house on the river and he is always going out on the jet ski, or tubing, and swimming, just anything in the water. While he may be just a normal kid, he still loves the piano, and one unique thing about him is that he was the youngest featured Jazz Pianist to play at the Jazz Standard in NYC once a month for the past two years. He played with the Jazz Youth Orchestra.
Christopher has a lot of fun at everything he does, and this plays a big part in his success. To be successful in anything it takes dicapline and a lot of hard work. Christopher is a great example of what someone can accomplish, and he is on his way to becomming one the greatest piano players ever. The best advise that his mom and dad has given him, works for anyone, and that is, "What ever you do in life, do it to the best of your ability.
